29/09/2011

Hanham travelled to Downend to play in the Minor Knockout this Tuesday and managed to get through to the next round by the closest of margins. The score was 3-3 but we won on board count as we won on board 3 while they won on board 5, all other games were drawn. We also welcomed back to the fold our great friend Glen Beaver.

I will be working on a video with commentary in the next few days/weeks of my game and all my games this year so if anyone is interested please keep an eye out on youtube. If you want to view some excellent chess videos that are miles better than i can possibly hope mine will be, go and see Andrew Martin's youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/YMChessMaster

It has nearly been 3 weeks so there is quite a few updates so bear with me.

Lets start with results; Clevedon did the double on us by beating our A & B teams with their respective A & B teams. The B Team did manage a creditable draw versus Downend D. Also one result that made my day, our C-Team beat South Bristol C.

31/08/2011 No transfer deadline deals for Hanham Chess Club, but I have updated the fixtures and the What's On page.
30/08/2011

I can announce that the new 2011 Hanham Chess Club Champion is Anthony Carver.

The new season is approaching fast and that means the Club Championship is near. In fact it is taking place tomorrow.

I will update this website as more information comes in. I do plan to keep the updates more regular this year, but I do have an exam coming up in October so they will be short and sweet till then.

GAMBIT NIGHT REPORT (from Steve Woolgar)

The second Hanham Gambit Night took place on Tuesday 10th May 2011.

The event was well attended, with 13 confirmed entries before the event and another 7 arriving at the venue on the night, with a total of seven clubs from the Bristol and District Chess League represented.

There were a total of 25 gambits that could have been played on the night, ranging from some relatively well-known gambits such as the Volga and the Scotch, to the From, Bluemenfeld and Staunton gambits, to the Bristol-based Clifton Gambit, named after Clifton Chess Club (1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Be2).

Of the fifty games played on the night, only the final game of the final round finished as a draw. This made it easier to sort out the pairings!

The grading prize was set at U-140 following the entry, as a large number of high-graded players entered, making for a strong tournament.

Final standings:

1st: David Buckley (Bath), 5/5

=2nd: Adam Stirling (Bath), Michael White, Alex Rossiter (Cabot) 4/5

=5th: George Crockart (South Bristol), Simon Greely (Downend), Dave Tipper (Downend), Lynda Roberts (Thornbury), Neil Derrick (Cabot), Richard West (Hanham) 3/5

=11th: Will Robinson (Cabot), Phil Lawson (Hanham), Anthony Carver (Hanham), Graham Mill-Wilson (Yate), Tony Broadway (Hanham), Roger Williams (Hanham) 2/5

=17th: Chris Smith (Thornbury), John Griffee (Hanham) 1/5

=19th: Martyn Chandler (Hanham), John Edwards (Hanham) 0.5/5.

Prizes:

First prize: £20 plus certificate to David Buckley

Second prize: £12 shared between Adam Stirling, Michael White and Alex Rossiter

U-140 Grading Prize: £10 to Richard West.

Hanham were unfortunately well beaten 5.5 - 0.5 in the Minor Knockout Final. Congratulations to Clifton who have now won an amazing triple, Division 1 and both the knockout trophies!

Thankyou for are whole team (Hanham) who've played brilliantly this year. Especially when you consider that we are all graded at or below the allowed average, 135!! Highlights must include beating last years winners South Bristol to reach he final while being heavily outgraded!!

Here is a short video of the final!

The first Hanham Gambit Night in two years was very successful with 20 entries, with David Buckley emerging victorious! The best Hamham player was Richard West! Well Done all!

Our A-team finished the season with a good draw against Horfield last week. Hopefully picking up some good form before the Minor Knockout Final on Thursday 12th May. Which will be at Hanham Community Centre though we will officially be the away team.

I have started a hanhamchess youtube channel. I have put a test video up at the moment though there are some familiar faces. http://youtu.be/0Xq3Hq90Nv8. The whole thing is a little experimental at the moment. I am looking to interview our club members to do an introductory video to our club, any volunteers?

08/04/2011 Last night Hanham despite being heavily outgraded beat South Bristol in the Minor Knockout to reach the final! Well done team Hanham, Steve, James, Tim, Phil, Anthony & Richard.
01/04/2011 Last Night the B-Team heroically drew with tob of the table South Bristol B. Two updates in two nights I must be feeling a bit faint.
31/03/2011 I have done a few minor updates. The major item is that I have uploaded the Hanham Gambit Night entry form onto the website and updated the What's On! page.
