GAMBIT NIGHT REPORT (from Steve Woolgar)
The second Hanham Gambit Night took place on Tuesday 10th May 2011.
The event was well attended, with 13 confirmed entries before the event and another 7 arriving at the venue on the night, with a total of seven clubs from the Bristol and District Chess League represented.
There were a total of 25 gambits that could have been played on the night, ranging from some relatively well-known gambits such as the Volga and the Scotch, to the From, Bluemenfeld and Staunton gambits, to the Bristol-based Clifton Gambit, named after Clifton Chess Club (1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Be2).
Of the fifty games played on the night, only the final game of the final round finished as a draw. This made it easier to sort out the pairings!
The grading prize was set at U-140 following the entry, as a large number of high-graded players entered, making for a strong tournament.
