Hanham 'B' 3.5 - Yate 'A' 2.5

We won despite being outgraded on every board, by an average of over 28 points.

John comprehensively demolished his opponent and was first to win. Brian also appeared to win easily, while Andy had a superior position, but his partner declined a draw and relied on superior technique to win. I hung on in B v N ending despite being a pawn down.

Harambee ‘A’ 4 - Hanham ‘B’ 2

Harambee maintained their 100% score on 1st October by beating us 4-2.  In fact, the match was closer than the score suggests, since the advantage in Roger’s game swung back and forth & he might well have won, while Brian agreed a draw only when the match result was certain; he was a pawn ahead in a major piece ending.  I blundered a pawn in the opening, but managed to obtain active play, and after 90 minutes my opponent proposed a draw.  Anthony lost quickly, bur Andy appeared to hold his much stronger opponent (25 points grading difference) for a considerable time before eventually shedding a piece.

Keynsham ‘B’ 2 – 4 Hanham ‘B’

With our captain missing the first fixture of the season, it was my job to step into the breach dear friends. Having had the shakiest of starts to last season we were determined to start well and build momentum.

It did not start so well, with Anthony losing his second game to Neil Adams in as many days. My game was a tense affair until my opponent opened up his h-file allowing my rook to get a discovered attack on his queen. So with the score 1-1 There was positive results for John Griffee, Anthony Macleod and draws for Roger and Brian.

A great start to the season!! Phil
